I've been waiting for a new iMac, and then I decided to wait until Leopard came out. Now I'm wondering if there will be a significant difference in the next imac released. I have one friend who says he's sure that Apple will release it mid-jan at the Mac World conference. I have another friend who said the last imac update was more or less cosmetic.
Does anyone have an ideas or predictions about the next imac, if it will be a significant change, or your more typical, speed bump and slightly newer parts, and if they think it would be out next Mac World. I just wonder if I should buy now, or hold out? Maybe a matte screen? chip sets? who knows? Thanks in advance!

They just updated the iMac. I wouldn't count on it.

Just keep on waiting. Maybe one day there won't be any iMac updates so you'll have the latest model indefinitely!
On a more serious note: With the latest update the iMac received the Santa Rosa chipset, which isn't exactly cosmetic. Penrym will be released in February, but it could very well take a handful of months before it will actually make it's way to the iMac (like it did with Santa Rosa). Which effectively means you could be left waiting for another 6 ~ 10 months.
If you want a new iMac, now is the time to buy one. There will always be a new design, new chipset, new CPU, new videocard scheduled for release... Plus the latest iMac will run Mac OS X Leopard at the speed of light. Seriously, my 24" 2.8GHz iMac is blazing fast like you wouldn't believe.

New chips coming in Jan or Feb (higher clockrates, more cache, new instructions, yada yada) along with a platform/chipset update (Santa Rosa/Crestline refresh) to support them. A more substantial platform/chipset upgrade (Montevina/Cantiga) will come later in the first half of 2008.
I'd guess Apple will wait for Cantiga before updating the iMacs.

Yup and by the end of 2008 the quad core mobile CPUs from Intel will arrive, so you might as well wait for that too. And before you know it it's january 1st 2035.

The current Meroms on Crestline are doing fine on the iMac. Especially since there's a Merom XE BTO option. I'm expecting Apple to wait for Cantiga till they release the new Penryn iMac. In other words: 2Q08.

I'd say the chances of a new iMac at Macworld are 50/50. It's absolutely possible that they'd update it then (likely just a speedbump, nothing too substantial), but it's equally possible that they won't.
Helpful, neh?

There won't be a different LOOKING iMac by MacWorld, but speedbumps are possible.
