We have two mighty mice in our house, and over the past few weeks they have both started suffering the same problem - the little scroll ball only works while scrolling up. Is this a common problem? How do we open them up to fix them?

Hi.

There are many technical documents on how to clean the Mighty Mouse ball online.

Perhaps start with this one:

The cleaning method works great, especially if you do it regularly. However, I didn't know this and my first Mighty Mouse's ball became unsavable after a while. Fortunately, I was able to fill out a form in the support section of Apple's site and they sent me a brand new mouse right away. I just had to send back my old one and it didn't cost me anything. A very good last resort.

This is a VERY common problem- I'm on my 3rd Mighty Mouse myself.

I called Apple and they just sent me another one next day, no questions asked. I do have Applecare, though so that may have been why it was so easy.

The cleaning method only works temporarily.

I think it was about 8 months after I bought it, so the computer was still under the 1 year warranty. I didn't need a receipt or anything.

I had this same problem. Apple replaced it. It's weird that it so often happens that it will still scroll up but not down.
