[edit] Apple has two part numbers for the Mac Pro PSU now.
both are 980W
Ver. 1 (661-4001) this is the one that was in my machine
Ver. 2 (661-4309) this is the new one.
Are they interchangeable? Is the new one only for the 8-core?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, i forgot to buy the extended warranty (shame on me) and now my Mac Pro's PSU is dead.
I read somewhere that it is a standard ATX PSU with 900 Watts but that Apple wires it differently to the motherboard.
Can anyone help me with this?
Apple wants over $300 for a replacement and the service centers will not sell it over the counter.
the other possibility would be for me to open it and look for the part that failed and replace it. i'm sure it's just some capacitor.
any ideas welcome. TIA
Olivier

you make a good point. i didn't know that about the price of the high-powered PSUs.
i guess now my next question is:
should i trust www . We Love Macs . Com and order it from them?

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple swapped a few pins or added a nonstandard connector somewhere, but I don't know that they did. A good 1kW PSU is $250+... for that small of a difference I'd just pay what Apple wants.

Agreed. It's $270 to buy a 1kw PSU from a reputable brand (Antec). And the OCZ and thermaltakes are both in the $300+ range. Apple's PSU really isn't that expensive.

Do you have a picture or description of the connectors? I'd be surprised if they didn't use the standard EPS12V connectors.

I'm thinking that if they now have a new part number it may be because it's a more reliable unit.

Because nothing changed physically other than greater cooling due to a better internal ( to the PSU ) layout.
Apple is also known to issue new part numbers when alternate manufacturers are used for second sources or when functionally identical revisions are made.
