Greetings! It's been almost two years since I've posted anything here, I believe. I was a Mac convert then, and a veteran now, working from my second Mac notebook. Needless to say, I love Macs and haven't had ANY complaints about them. I talk them up enough, that I've been able to convert a few people to Macs as well.

The latest potential convert just got her new iMac yesterday, loaded with Tiger, with a Leopard DVD upgrade. Of course, the upgrade had to be done!

Now, this one day old iMac will not boot… At all.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Does it turn on when the power button is pushed and then just sit there, or not even turn on at all?

After several attempted restarts, we've been getting everything from no boot at all (black screen with no activity) to the gray screen with the Apple logo (no spinning gear at the bottom, either). In between that, there is also the black screen where we get the startup 'bong' then the gray screen without the Apple logo and finally, we've seen a black screen with repeated 'bongs' as if I were zapping the PRAM (though I'm not touching the keyboard at the time).

What type of install did she do ? If it was an " upgrade install ", try a archive and install or a clean install.

Doesn't the iMac 'bong' a few times in a row if theres a problem with the RAM? I thought I read that in the little booklet that came with my iMac. Does it boot up with the restore DVD at all?

If the thing is one day old, for heaven's sake, call Apple! I ended up hving to talk with support several times when I got my new imac in August, because it simply wouldn't not transfer over my old stuff from a a G4 tower. (I read about other people having similar trouble later.) That computer is qualified for telephone support, so have her call. Right away.

Not unless there's some stupid new startup scheme. The chime signifies passing POST, and if there were a problem with the RAM that was identified that early on it would not chime. You may be thinking of diagnostic beeps.

OP: Definitely return it and demand a new Mac.
