Are the new iMacs coming with Leopard pre-installed?
The iMac I bought today has the Mac OS install disk 1 10.4.10 version 1.1 and the Mac OS X install disk 2 version 1.0. and the Mac OS X Leopard CPU Drop-in DVD.
If I were to have problems with the iMac that would require a remove and install of the OS, will I have to install all these disks or just the Mac OS X Leopard DVD?

You won't have to install 10.4 first, since the Leopard disk contains everything you need. However, you will want to use your Tiger restore disk to install separate components like iLife, which came with your Mac but are not included in the Leopard DVD.

If you have a Time Machine backup, all you'll need to do is use the Leopard DVD and choose to use a TM backup to restore from. All your apps will be restored too (assuming you haven't elected to not back those up). You won't need to re-install anything like iLife apps etc., in the conventional sense from now on.

The installer on Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD is going to look for an installed 10.4 OS X in your system to proceed with the installation, you could have an external hard disk with a barebones 10.4 installation and then be able to install 10.5 into your internal hard disk with no previous 10.4 installed there… In a nutshell, with a CPU Drop-In DVD to have a previous system installed is a requisite.

Are you sure about that? I don't remember reading that somewhere. It's crappy that you can't do a totally clean install...

You can. The Drop in checks to see if Tiger is on the HD. If so, then the installer will proceed as normal and you can choose to do an erase and install.

No, it checks to see whether you have 10.4 or ABOVE on the system. If you have 10.5 already installed, you can reinstall it with no hassle. Unless the drop ins and up-to-dates work differently, but I don't see why they would.

It doesn't seem to always work. While using a Drop-in disk from an iMac and trying to install Leopard on a G4 Powerbook with Tiger 10.4.11 installed it brings up an error message and says Tiger would not be present.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Probably because you're using an iMac disc with a PowerBook...

The drop in DVDs only install on Machines with Intel Tiger or higher. Power PC Tiger editions would not be supported.

It worked fine. There was a problem for the installer to recognise the internal System folder. After running Disk Utilities installation worked fine on G4 Powerbook.
Thank you again.

Run "Disc Utility" in the Leopard installer and run "Repair Disc Permissions". That'll do the trick. Worked for me.
