Okay. I have a 24" iMac with a mini-dvi port. I have a 2nd LCD I'd like to use with it. I understand I need the 'mini-dvi to dvi' adaptor. However, I'm confused about what other cable I need. I've been reading that there is DVI-I and DVI-D, and I really don't know what I need now. Do I need ANOTHER adaptor to use a DVI monitor?

TIA!!!

If your external LCD has a DVI port, then all you need is the Mini-DVI to DVI cable.

I have a similar set-up. The iMac will see the additional screen immediately.

Do you mean a mini-dvi to dvi adaptor (dongle)? Because I've never heard of a full cable with mini-DVI. To the OP, you need the mini-DVI to dvi adaptor as well as a male to male DVI cable (if your monitor doesn't already have a cable attached). If the cable you get is just DVI-D to DVI-D (no analog pins in the connection), you should be fine.

So I HAVE to get the DVI-D cable, not the DVI-I cable, right? I am just double checking before ordering the cable.

StrengthDesign.

DVI-D is what you'll need.
