is my iMac G4 fan dead?

In Dec 2003 I bought a G4 iMac... the kind with the half-basketball shape and the screen on the swivel neck... and about a week ago my fan seemed to be going on and off a little erratically, unlike when it seemed to be going on and off as if by thermostat control... Yesterday it didn't go on at all. I have taken to shutting my computer off whenever I stop using it. It gets pretty hot.

How freaked out should I be?
How quickly should I run down to the Mac repair place?
Is this considered a "major" repair?

Help me please...

Do you possibly have the hardware test CD that came with the Mac?

That will tell you whether or not there's a fan issue.
