Hello all,
I am planning to buy a Macbook-pro for a long time now. I reside in Germany and a friend of mine is going to the US. Since Macbook pro costs the same price in Euros and Dollars ($1999), I would save a substantial amount if I buy in USD and pay in Euros with the current xchange rate.
But some important questions are concerning me and I am not sure if its a right decision for me to make that much investment. May be some experienced people can enlighten my brain here.
1. In Germany, Apple gives 1 year guarantee and by law, the seller must guarantee 2 years warranty (for any product ). That means, I am safe for 2 years here in Germany. If I buy in the US,it would cost me 1500 EUR and if I buy it in Germany, it would cost me (1800 EUR - after some discounts). So basically I would save 300 Eur.
I am not able to get a direct answer anywhere in the internet for the following questions, if I buy the US product and use it in Germany.
What is the guarantee period in the US? (is it 1 year)
is it an international guarantee? (meaning can I claim the guarantee in Germany9
Any similar experiences? pros and cons of this?
Can anyone comment on this?
Since I need to decide in 1 day, I would appreciate if anyone can post a quick reply.
Many thanks in advance
Background: I read a lot that it is stupid to buy an apple product without enough guarantee.

AFAIK portable Macs come with a worldwide warranty so if you buy the MBP in the US an AASP in Germany should do warranty repairs during the first 12 months after you buy it. Also, you will be able to buy AppleCare anywhere as long as you buy it and then register on apple.com during the first year.
And just for the record, in principle you will have to pay the German VAT once you bring it to Germany.

Many thanks Simon.
what are AFAIK, MBP and AASP?
Cannot one laptop be brought for personal use without VAT?

Most Apple products now have worldwide warranty coverage, be it the standard one year or Applecare's three. It used to be just iPods and portables but was recently expanded to desktops. Not sure about servers.
I would recommend Applecare on any laptop. As components get smaller, their useful life under the rigours of continual heating and cooling is reduced.
