Here I sit, attempting to install 10.4 Tiger on a G4 powermac 867mhz.

Disk check
Hardwarechecks
all of them, go fine
install starts
gets past part 1

gets to loading essentials and stops with an error.

Apple documents say to remove 3rd party ram, only ram in here is apple ram never been touched.

what can I do to get this working.

Ok, update here.

After giving up on 10.4 for now, I went back to 10.2. That install seemed to work fine until the computer restarted, at which time I got the gray screen that told me to restart. I did, and the grey screen came back.

Is this telling me I have bad ram, which is the only explanation I can come up with.

Start up in verbose mode or single user mode and it may give you more of a hint where it's having problems in it's start up mode.

Do you have a second video card installed? If you do remove it. In fact remove any other peripherals and cards except for the primary video card, mouse and keyboard. It couldbee a 3rd party device.

It could be the RAM indeed. Sadly, just because it's Apple RAM doesn't mean it won't die. My G5's Apple chip went bad the other day, and my cheap $25 RAM is working great

I had the same issue. Make sure all 3rd party RAM is removed and Install Tiger, After you do all system updates reinstall 3rd party RAM

If you have spare slots, try one of your old RAM sticks at a time, and leave it in for a week. You'll know you've hit the bad one when your system becomes unstable that week.

You should try it for all of the old sticks though. It is possible that more than one of them was bad.
