I recently was given a first generation iLamp (700MHz G4) that I was told doesn't boot up. The HD and the original RAM had be pulled, but everything else was there.

So I plugged some PC133 I had laying around and an old HD (10.2 on it) into it and booted it up. Blinky ? folder. I pulled the HD and put a 10.3 install disk into it to see if I could get the machine to boot off the install disk, but no dice. The disk spins merrily away, but that is as far as I could get.

Are there any firmware commands that I can run to see if the ATA controller is toast, or something I can get the system to do to get it to recognize the HD/CD?

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

You could try booting from a firewire drive or using another Mac to startup in target disk mode.

Good idea.

I'll track down my Firewire enclosure, and see if that registers anything.

In the mean time, does anyone have a grasp on a firmware command that can tell me what ATA controllers are online? Or something that will get it to recognize my HD/CD

I don't think there's any such command in OpenFirmware. The easiest way to figure out if the Mac is salvageable is to startup from an external drive and look at System Profiler. From what you describe it doesn't sound good.

Yeah, I didn't have high hopes to begin with, but the fact that I got a startup bong improved my expectations. Now, if I can just find my Firewire HD case.....

Weird. I can't find my firewire case, so I looked around and found the option key boot, which allows me to select the boot system.

So, it starts up with the option of booting from the OS X install disk I have in the CD tray, but when I hit the --> , it just recycles and nothing happens. This indicates that the CD is visible to the system, but something after that prevents it from proceeding.

Anyone have an idea what this might mean?
