Well, I don't see this specifically covered in other threads, so here's what's going on. I have a 20" iMac Core Duo (Feb '06) that's a wonderful machine. 250GB, 1GB RAM, 256MB VRAM.

About two months ago it started acting strangely. Not bad, just annoying. Every once in a while when it fell asleep on its own it would not wake back up. I tried clicking the mouse, hitting keys on the keyboard, even tapping the power button. Nothing. So I was forced to hold the power button down to force shut down. This happened maybe one out of every five times or so that it went to sleep.

A couple of weeks later the same thing started happening when I put it to sleep (before then it only happened, as far as I could tell, when the machine fell asleep on its own).

Shortly thereafter it started having shutdown issues. That is, when I shut it down it would get to the blue screen after all the programs had closed, and then just sit and swirl. The first time this happened I didn't notice it until the next morning when I saw it still spinning. This has persisted ever since then, about one out of three or four times I shut it down.

Things haven't gotten any worse lately, but I'm a little concerned. I've tried isolating the machine from networks and USB perhipherals, but nothing seems to make a difference. I've run the utilities that came with the computer but everything checks out perfectly fine. I don't have any robust disk repair software, and I'm not anxious to splurge on it, either. I'm wondering if anyone else has or had this problem, and what they've done about it. Could it be something mechanical?

Cheers.

Most likely your machine is fine, your personal account preferences might be a bit messed up. Try this:
1. Activate a new account on your computer
2. login to the new account and use your machine, put it to sleep, wake it up, .. do all the things you normally do.

If things a are working fine for your you can migrate your data to the new account or you may want to backup data and do a clean install.

Do you happen to have HP printer or scanner software installed?

Even if not, make sure all your device drivers are up to date.
