So a friend gave me a Dual 1.8 GHz G5 the other day. It had no HD or RAM, so I've put a 160 Gb HD that we had lying around in it and also 1 Gb of RAM. I'd like to up the RAM to 4 Gb, but I really can't afford it right now. I also put a Radeon 9800 (I think) in it. It's running Leopard. I'm gonna donate it to my school as soon as I'm positive it's working right (she [the first owner] was complaining about kernel panics, but it hasn't done anything so far). It will be used for graphic design in CS3, Final Cut Express and iMovie HD 6 editing. Is there anything affordable that I can do to speed it up more? I'll probably add another Gb of RAM, but I really can't put more than $150 into it. Also, I know 160 Gb isn't much nowadays, but the school has about 50 Tb worth of external HDs, so storage isn't much of an issue. Thanks!

I have a dual 2.0Ghz G5 with 2.5GB of RAM, Radeon X800 XT video card, 400GB + 500GB of storage, AirPort Extreme, external D-Link BT adapter, and a Pioneer DVR-108D burner in it.

It runs Leopard pretty well. Since all G5s come at least a 4X SuperDrive, a faster drive may be consider.

Mainly it needs RAM, 1 GB being essentially unusable for the apps you list. A US$120 2x1=2GB RAM upgrade from OWC is a minimum to add: Find the latest Performance Upgrades, Firewire and USB Hard Drives, SATA, Memory, Laptop Battery, and more at OWC.

The other thing is for the users to be totally disciplined about not allowing that smallish hard drive to get above 100 GB full, ideally staying below 90 GB full. Usage of those apps can quickly fill such a small drive, leading first to slowdowns and then to instability. Good would be to add a larger drive as primary and set the 160 GB up for scratch disk usage and for temporary image file storage.

Since it already is a Leopard box I would want to have whatever OS comes out of Mac Expo SF January 15th up, running and stable prior to transferring to a school.

Alright, I'll add some RAM. I also found an 80 Gb HD to put in it, but like I said, storage really isn't an issue with all of the externals lying around. Also, I'm thinking I'll probably take the 16x DL DVD burner out of my G4 and put it in there.
