I recently put an ATI Radeon 7000 Mac Edition into my old beige PowerMac G3, OS 9.2.2, so it would better support my new 24" LCD monitor. It works fine but in order to display the image correctly, I have to adjust the monitor's internal scaling, to get a correctly proportioned 4:3 aspect ratio image.
My card didn't come with any software, but reading the PDF of the owner's manual online, I see that there was software, called ATI Display, that came with it originally.
What I'm wondering is; would the ATI Display software allow me to re-proportion the image so I can use the full 16/9 dimensions of the new LCD monitor? (Yes, I know I can use the full dimensions now, but the image is stretched horizontally and this is no good.)
If so, where would I find a download for this software?

It should be enough if you reset the resolution in the Displays control panel (don't remember what it's called exactly in OS 9) and set it to the native resolution of the panel. Otherwise, ATi probably still has it for download - look for drivers legacy products at their site.

Hey thanks.
Unfortunately Outlook Express 5 for Mac doesn't work with that website.
So I downloaded the file on my PC (where it shows up as a WinRAR ZIP archive) and emailed it to myself and then opened it on the Mac where it says it's a .zip file. I used StuffIt Expander to unstuff it and got a folder with two things in it; the ATI Radeon 7000 OS 9 Installer and a Read Me. Neither will open and give the standard "cannot be opened because the application that created it cannot be found".
Is there any other way to get that installer from you to me?

No problem, I can compress it as .zip or .sit under Mac OS 9… maybe, just a conjecture, Mac OS X doesn't take care of certain OS 9 resources, rendering the files as useless.
Then I could e-mail them to you, send me a private with an e-mail address where I could send it if that works for you.
Or if you have a place where to upload it, let me know.
Whichever suits you better

I have uploaded it as .sit file and as .zip file to this another file host service, you can use the iCab browser which AFAIK is the only Mac OS 9 web browser still in development ( iCab - Internet Taxi for the Mac) to download them with your Beige G3 Mac.
as .sit file:
TurboUpload- Archive.sit
as .zip file:
TurboUpload- Archive.zip
Both of them created under Mac OS 9.
I have checked it and I can download them under Mac OS 9 with iCab 3.0.3
Hope this helps.

Thanks again. I got it and have installed it. I now have 1920 x 1200 as a resolution in the Monitors Control Panel. This uses the whole 6:9 screen and the image is not horizontally distorted. Everything is tiny in comparison to what I am used to, so I guess I'll just have to sit closer as no other widescreen resolutions are offered.
Also, even though the ATI Displays is listed as a component of the install in the Read Me, and ATI Displays now appears in the Control Panel list under the Apple menu, when I go to it I get the error box, "ATI Displays cannot find any ATI Display product." Anyone know why this would be?

A 24" monitor with OS 9? What are you using it for?

Mostly for creating graphics in Freehand. Also some Photoshoping and some page-making in Quark.

Nice, I am also a OS 9 fan, hence I have a 2003 MDD… but I also like Freehand and Quark more than Adobe's apps -don't tell anyone-, but my dirty secret would be to get a Dual Core Power Mac G5 so I could run Freehand and Quark at full speed !!!
