Hey everyone,

As I've posted in a couple other threads, I have a Power Mac G4, 733 mHz. I am currently running 10.3 on it. Lately I've been having odd problems with it. First it wasn't recognizing the hard drive, and now I have a totally different problem.

I keep my Macs running all the time, I'm usually downloading files, talking to people, that sort of thing. For some reason, my Power Mac will just power down. Not to the point of shutting down, but it goes into sleep mode, and I'll have to wake it up. Has anyone else had to deal with this problem? I'm usually not running intense things on it, but pretty randomly it will decide to fall alseep.

Yes, I have disabled sleep.

Narcoleptic G4... Have you zapped the PRAM? Tried a PMU reset?

I haven't tried either, would it be easier for you to fill me in, or should I google it?

Wow, my Power Mac just turned itself off.

You zap the PRAM by holding down command-option-p-r at startup. You'll hear the startup sound repeated; wait for at least four. If that doesn't work, there's a button on the motherboard that can be pushed for a full reset of the power manager. You should Google that for instructions.

Alright, I have tried zapping the PRAM, but with no such luck. I would have reset my PMU, but I could only find guides for ibooks, and notebooks.

I don't know why it is restarting, I looked for some articles that mentioned cleaning out the air paths, but the machine is mostly clean. I don't know what it could be, it just started doing it!

Use the terms CUDA and G4 and see if you get any results (the PMU used be called CUDA). It's a small button on your motherboard that you press once and only once to do a reset.

Take a close look at the power button on the front. Does it look like it's popped halfway in? Or badly aligned to the surrounding case, so it might get stuck halfway in? If Energy Saver -> Options -> "Allow power button to sleep the computer" is checked, then a power button that makes intermittent contact would put your G4 to sleep each time.

Alternative: something is nudging the power button now and then when you are not looking. Something like that cat on youtube that flushes the toilet all the time.
