Just reciently my iMac G5 stopped reading Cds. It has no problem reading DVDs but it won't read CDs. The drive acts like its reading it, then it spits it out a few minutes later. Is it a software issue or did the CD portion of the drive fail?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The drive has two different lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs. This is the way just about every combo drive (probably all of 'em, but I'm trying to be careful in what I say). So it's quite possible for the laser (or part of the system tied to it) to fail for CDs while the DVD laser and its system just keeps going. This is a bummer, but one you can live with. First, you can get an external drive for reading/playing CDs. Or you could just replace your internal drive.

Well thats a bummer. Should I get something to clean the laser? I've read that its possible that a drive could pick up some dust over time.

Thanks

Cleaning it can't hurt. Don't expect miracles, but that's a good idea. Any CD/DVD drive cleaner should work pretty well, but be very careful of those that include a liquid cleaning agent, and only put the tiniest amount on the cleaning pads.

Alright, I'll try it out and if that doesn't work, I guess I need to get a new drive. A lot of my work is on cds. Thanks for all your help.

Did you get any onscreen messages with a red sign (like a stop sign) that says that the disc you inserted can't be read by this computer?

In this case, an achive&install might help, as it could be software related. I had this happen on an older computer, but the other way round: could read CDs, but no DVDs. An archive & install fixed it.

I have a similar problem with blank DVD's, when i insert them the thing comes up asking what i want to do, i usually select whatever is default and hit ok (it really doesn't matter what i select though). The disc never shows up on my desktop, the eject button does nothing, and if i create a burn folder and select burn it says to insert a disc. The only way i have to eject it is to go into itunes and select the eject button there. Then i can reinsert it and hope it gets recognized correctly that time.

What gives?
