You should install

Flip4Mac

Perian (available at Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime components )

VLC

RealPlayer Free (don't worry, it's completely harmless on the Mac and utterly unable to crap all over your system as it does under Windows. It's really a very good citizen these days.)

Between those and the ones that are pre-installed, you should have every video format you'll come across on the web covered, except for DRM (copy-protected) Windows Media crap, for which there is currently no solution on the Mac other than to run it on Windows within a virtual machine such as Parallels.

Not to hijack the thread, but I had a similar question regarding WMV files and I'm having a hard time installing Flip4Mac. Check out my thread below...

....and also install the K-Lite Codec pack. It allows you to open all the major kinds of video and audio media and automatically integrates with all the media players you are using.

Just do a web search for "K-Lite Codec" and download the free version.

This is the list I've compiled for viewing video on the web:

http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm
(Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported)

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

http://www.real.com/player

http://perian.org/

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...ShockwaveFlash

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...treamclip.html

In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).

In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).

Hello, and welcome to MacNN. As the name indicates, MacNN is a forum devoted to Apple's Macintosh computers and the associated operating system. The K-Lite codec pack, and 99% of all codec packs, are made for Windows. Please keep this in mind in your future posts.

I've started using vlc and for the most part it seems acceptable. I've noticed however that certain AVI formatted vids play really choppy. The screen freezes (like a screenshot) while the time counter keeps going. Dunno if this is a problem due to the original source (ie recorded in low frame rate, etc) or some setting I'm missing on vlc. (Don't know why they chose a "caution orange" pylon as a desktop icon though)
