Greetings,

I own a original Mac Pro (love it) and was wondering if now that the new Mac Pros support the GeForce 8800GT if I could just buy an off the shelf GeForce 8800GT and stick it in my older Mac Pro? Or will I have to wait till Apple sells it as an option no doubt for a higher than market value price?

Thanks,

Devmage

You cannot put any 8800GT in your MP if you want to use it in OS X. For that you'll have to buy the 8800GT upgrade kit from Apple. It's available for $349.

If you want to use the 8800GT for games under Windows you can buy one off the shelf. It won't work in OS X, but if you use Boot Camp to boot in XP you'll be able to use the card.

The 8800GT Upgrade kit off the Apple site is for the new Mac Pros (early 2008) only.

Thats based on info being dug up over at the World of Warcraft boards, and has comments by their mac programmer in the thread.
(source).

Until the cards start shipping (they have a few weeks lead time), noone really will know what workarounds can be made to get them to work in the older model systems.

The source for that claim is Apple itself.

Mac Pro: Video cards from Power Mac G5 computers are not supported

"...All of these cards are only compatible with the family of computers with which they shipped..."

I hate to do thread necromancy, but this never got an answer. I can get an PNY XLR8 GeForce 8800GT 512MB PCI-e 2.0 SLI Ready Video Card - VCG88512GXPB for $110 with free shipping if it will work with the Mac.

Does anyone know if it will?

It will not work with Mac OS X, but it should work with Windows under Boot Camp.
