I am having problems copying files from my iMac computer to USB flash drives. Sometimes, I get the error message: "Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error Code -50)."
How can I solve this problem?
This error message does not happen everytime but rather occasionally. Most of the files I am trying to copy to my USB flash drives are MS Word documents. I have tried using various brands of flash drive, but I still get this error message.
I use my USB flash drives for both Mac and Windows OS computers. For my 2GB Kingston Data Traveller flash drive, I checked its product datasheet on the Kingston website, and it says that it is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows OS, and that I can use it for cross-platform PC/Mac file transfers.
I also checked the Properties tab for this flash drive, and the File System for the drive is listed as "FAT."
My system is a 400 Mhz iMAC running MacOS 10.1.5

Not all USB sticks work reliably with USB 1.1, which is all your iMac has.
I know Pretec makes some that are certified to work with USB 1.1, but I assume that's just a local rebranding of some generic stick.
If a stick says that it's explicitly compatible with Mac OS 9, then it MUST work properly under USB 1.1, since OS 9 never supported the USB 2 standard. So that might be one thing to look for (I know Pretec's state OS 9 compatibility on the box).
However, it's not unlikely that your eight-year-old computer may just be starting to go tits-up.

Do know what the "Error Code -50" means?
I have been told that I should reformat my USB drives as MacOS drives. Do you think this would solve the problem? And would I still be able to use the USB drives with Windows PCs?

It's an error related to file system problems, apparently (from googling it).
If it occurs in relation to iDisk access, repairing permissions on the startup disk with Disk Utilitiy and then rebooting appears to help. Might want to try that for this case, as well?

No.
And no.
Also, 10.1 is *ancient* and had a lot of issues that have *long* since been fixed.
Your iMac will run 10.4 Tiger very nicely, and it will be *much* faster than 10.1 (provided you have at least 512 MB RAM; preferably more).
