reference the new mac pro:

isn't just 1 processor worth a $500 savings...or not? since 1 of these is a hot performer why buy 2?

i intend to do the 8800gt, does this affect processor choice?

thanks in advance.

If you don't need the second for your usage, then just buy one. You can probably add another later.

Graphics card choice has no impact on CPU choice.

i guess my confusion is over number of cores vs. number of cpu's. this is confusing me. i am upgrading from a g4 dp 800 so anything will be a giant leap.

The big answer: futureproofing. Just as the Apple has been leveraging the graphics card more and more with the OS, the future looks to be about multiple-core and multiple processors. A dual processor box will give you more usable life out of your machine.
The era of anthropomorphizing hardware is over.

makes sense to play it safe and go dual i guess, $500 wouldnt be much if i all of a sudden needed it for some reason.

as for use, well, i use it for everything from games to photoshop stuff and its the only computer in the house.

thanks for the input, it is appreciated!

There are advantages of more processors over more cores, IF there are separate busses to the separate processors - they don't have to share memory bandwidth, whereas cores have to share memory bandwidth. But then there are alot of other things that affect advantages and disadvantages of having more cores and/or processors.

my next big choice is the standard video vs the 8800gt or getting 2 2600's. the 3-5 week wait is an issue for the 8800gt. for gaming the 8800gt would likely be awesome

If you do much gaming, the 8800 should be a no-brainer

If one 8800GT is fine for you, then two 2600s offers no value over one 2600.
