Why is issue with the 8800 any different then prior updates. the X1900xt is a prime example, same exact problem. While I'm just as guilty for wanting instant gratification, patience is the name of the game.

I'm not surprised... it sounds like the problem caught them by surprise and it could be fixed on either end: new firmware for the Mac Pro or new firmware for the 8800GT.

How did the X1900 have the same problem? There was no prior Mac Pro for it to be compatible with. The PowerMacs had a fundamentally different firmware architecture, but they got their own retail version of the X1900.

If true, that definitely sounds like good news. And I can assure Steve, once the 8800GT works with every MP people will calm down.

If I were Steve, I'd have a hard time restraining myself as much as he did in that e-mail.

Sending 'strongly worded' and legal action threatening e-mails to Steve is a bit over the top. And in general it's just plain stupid.

And counterproductive. Legal threats tend to lock down courses of action, as those involved reflexively act to involve their lawyers and run everything through them.

Hence why I am a bit skeptical of the whole thing. I honestly cant see an executive of a company responding to such a letter, let alone responding with the type of response that was claimed.

Besides, I have heard of very few people actually getting a response from SJ himself. Typically, if there is a big, legitimate complaint, presented in a clear and fair manner, the person hears back from someone at the top of customer relations.

Just my 2 cents.

Well is it just me or was Steve's reply to another guy than the guy that posted the "I will sue you" baloney?

Don't be too skeptical.

Seems like every year or so, the subject of whether or not Steve actually replies to e-mails from that address comes up. And it is actually him.

He responds to very few e-mails, and usually the responses are brief. But he does respond.

I realize he does respond, and that it is very rare. That is part of why I don't buy it. All of the emails I have read that he has responded to in the past, have been legit gripes, that were carefully and fairly worded. The email sent was an inflammatory, threatening email. While the request IMHO is fair (to make the 8800GT work on older MPs), the tone and content of the email seems to me to be the kind of thing a company executive would either ignore, or pass on to the legal department.

I fully believe that Steve Jobs will respond to certain emails when he feels like it. I don't think he'd say "I suggest you calm down" however. Unless he treats his customers like he treats his employees.

On second thought...

Well, the poster of that thread on the Apple board only posted Steve's reply, not the e-mail that prompted it. I imagine it may have been fairly rude.

And I've read enough stuff on Apple and Jobs over the years to feel like I have a fairly decent grasp of the types of things he might say. And I could definitely see that type of response, especially if the e-mail he was responding to was very dramafied. Which it probably was.

Probably to remove the "response" from Steve Jobs.

Though I do believe there will probably be enough noise that Apple will eventually release a Mac Pro v. 1 compatible 8800.

Yeah, I doubt that it was a personal message from Steven: even in the work environment he rarely used email (outside of the ra-ra PR messages, that I bet he didn't write himself.) When Steven want's you to calm the **** down, he calls you.

(I was the architect of the retail store network (Nexus), and yes, I've had my ass chewed out in person. As it went on, I could hardly keep from smiling -- it's almost a badge of honor!)
