I have an older iMac G4 768 MB.

I bought this machine used from a friend 3 yrs ago. It had X 10.2 on it. Not realizing I did a restore but the disk bundle I had was 10.1 and this is trouble because nothing runs on 10.1. I cant even get my external hard drive to be recognized.

A friend of mine gave me 10.4 and leopard. I popped the 10.4 in and the machine freaked out and started reading all of these errors and the disk would not eject which I finally got out? Do I have to start out at 10.2 and work my way up and where do I get 10.2? No one has that. Am I screwed.

This machine is horrible on 10.1!!!
Thanx!

The disk was grey and the leopard disc just had the new leopard logo on it.

grey discs are made for specific machines, probably not the one you have, and i'll bet that is your problem. don't use it again.

just to add, if your imac shipped with 10.1 (as mine did) it's probably an early model and won't run 10.5. your best bet is to pick up a retail version of 10.4 in the secondary market (ebay).

10.5 won't run without some messing around with the install, unless you had the 1.0/1.25GHz iMac G4 - I think. However, 10.4.11 runs great on my 700 MHz iMac.
15" Powerbook G4 | 1.67 GHz | 2GB RAM | 10.5.1
15" iMac G4 | 700 MHz | 1GB RAM | 10.4.11
