Is it just me or are the cables for the iMac's keyboard and mouse really really short?
I understand that people normally do not use all of the cable length, but they are too short.
I mean for a 24inch monitor they are super short.
thoughts?

Mouse cable is fine imo as I am plugging it into the keyboard (if anything, it is actually a bit too long for this set-up), but yes, the keyboard cable is woefully short. Luckily for me I had an extension cable from my EyeTV DTT stick that I wasn't using, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to use the keyboard on my computer desk's designated drawer.

Apple doesn't include a keyboard extension cable with computers anymore?

I didn't get an extension with my 20" iMac. The mouse cable is just long enough for it to plug into the back of the iMac or the side of the keyboard. The keyboard cable is not much longer. This works really well with my iMac and my desk, but I can see wanting a bit more space between the keyboard and the 24" display...
Fortunately, USB extension cables aren't expensive and are fairly easy to find-I've gotten them with USB flash drives more than once.

Given that I didn't get one with my indigo iMac way back in 1999/2000, I would say that they haven't been doing so for a very, very long time now!

Apple used to include the extension cables with the pro (tower) machines when they included keyboards because you can put a tower on the floor. With the iMac, typically you're right in front of it, so there's no need for an extension.

the more i use the computer, the more that I realize that the cable is way too short.
that 24inch monitor dictates a longer cable and so does the mouse.
Honestly with the cable length, you end up sitting way too close.

I haven't used a corded mouse or keyboard for six or seven years and I don't miss them one bit. Unless you're into fast twitch games, go wireless and you'll be happy.

Ah, hence my confusion. It's so great having an Apple employee around here.

I really don't want to have enough "tough questions" to even want 24/7 access to an Apple employee.
I'd also like to point out that those "interesting" folks you see with the Apple polo shirts at Apple Stores are also "Apple employees." You know who I'm talking about-odd hair, distinct (yet not necessarily based in reality) opinions about hardware and software, yet a significantly puzzled look when you ask "how much RAM will this iMac support?" Yeah, those folks. With my luck, if I had need for someone like Steve, I'd get assigned "Greg-the blond guy with the dreads" -and his puzzled look would come with him as a free bonus.
