New to this forum but long time Mac user. I have 4 G4 notebooks (2 for college students, 1 each for spouse and myself). I'm doing the Video for local soccer games. I did it last year all on my Powerbook G4. Lots of fun and turned out very successful video's and podcasts for the team. The time rendering was very Painful.....I'm doing it again this year and trying to decide what to buy. I'm going to get stuck buying new Macbooks for the college students in the fall which will domino into buying my wife and I new notebooks too (Air...maybe) due to keeping everyone on the same operating system. This is a lot of $$ and I'm trying to minimize the outlay. I'm toying with the idea of buying a low cost iMac to do this video for the team but some people have suggested the mini or just pull the trigger on a MacBook or MBpro. Any ideas...because buying 4 computers isn't really a good thing.

The iMac is a great idea for doing video... you'll really appreciate the larger/faster hard drive compared to the mini. Of course if you need portability, you'll have to go with the MB instead. And if you need portability and a large screen, then the MBP.

The iMac is the definitely the best in terms of bang for buck. If it needs to be portable you'll have to settle for a MBP or MB, but if it doesn't the iMac will be better suited for video (better disk and CPU performance).
I'd try to stay away from the mini. It's a fine Mac as media box in your den (I actually use a mini for exactly that) or as a second or third machine for light use, but is a budget Mac and you will notice it. I would only recommend a mini if you can't afford anything else - especially when it comes to more demanding tasks like editing audio or video content. If you can afford the iMac over the mini, do yourself favor and get the iMac.

Thanks...it confirmed what I've been thinking. My main concern is the speed of the rendering. Doing it on the PowerBook G4 takes mucho hours for a 1.5 hour soccer game. I burn 5 DVD's per game and last year I was sure the G4 would breakdown after doing the soccer banquet and burning 50 DVD's for the parents. I gotta hand to Apple. The 12" PowerBook hung in there. This year I wanted to do it a little better and maybe even move up to Final Cut Express. Just buying that many computers is sort of a pain....
