Hello. Can you add any USB dvd burner to a mac mini or do I need to get a specific brand? I'm really thinking of buying a $599 model but the combo drive is a killer and going to $799 for the superdrive is too much.

Yes you can and they're pretty cheap.. $25 enclosure and $25 burner.

So you'll have a combo HD DVD / Blu Ray burner. Can you play those movies on your mac? Newb here.
24" Alu 2.4ghz iMac, 4gb mem, 320gb hd, 500gb Lacie external hd.

There's no licensed software to play BluRay or HDDVD on OS X. I believe it can be done with unlicensed hacks (decrypt the disk, then play it in a standard media player).

No special hardware is required yet beyond the drive; there are provisions in the AACS standard to require HDCP for full-resolution output in the future.
