Hello,
I am trying to help my sister (long distance) who is having problems with her
I mac G3, system 9.
She powered it off, with a cd in it. I talked her through getting the cd out. Done.
When powered up, she gets three messages.
1. Your computer did not shut down properly. Disc first aid is checking your hard disc and will repair any problems. If your computer is having problems see Mac help for trouble shooting information. You can turn off the warning by going to the control panels. The verification is done.
She pressed DONE .
Next...two more messages appear.
2. Application Finder has unexpectedly quit. Save your work in another open application and restart your computer.
(Only one way to close this box - by clicking the little box upper left corner.)
3. Partially seen beneath the above Finder message is another, "Quick Time MPEG extension was not installed."
(There is an option to click "ok".)
She has closed the Finder message, ok-ed the quicktime one, and the cursor freezes.
She has done force quit, force start, unplugged it, has rebuilt the desk top and nothing prevents the same three things mentioned above from happening over and over. We are out of ideas and would greatly appreciate someone's help. If she was able to do it, she would have uninstalled a game if that would help but nothing is functioning. Thanks in advance for any help.

Need to boot from an install disk and run Disk Utility (or whatever it was under OS 9; it's been so long!). Best thing to do: upgrade to OS X (10.3 or maybe 10.4). The Quicktime message is just a missing system extension. Nothing big there other than reinstalling Quicktime. The Finder quitting is the main problem. The install needs to be repaired or reinstalled.

The "not shut down properly" message will always appear if you crashed and restarted without selecting it from the Special menu (which seems to be the case all the time here).

Do the ibook_steve deal, he is dead on. Next, the crash is probably an extension problem. Restart with the Shift key held down, that will boot without any extensions and control panels loading. Go to the Extensions Manager Control Panel and select something like Basic System 9. Restart with that set, that is the standard no frills, plain vanilla operating system.

You can kill the "not shut down properly" in the Control Panels in the General Controls Control Panel, there is a check box to shut that nonsense down.

After hours of trying to resolve the above mentioned problems, we are down to dealing with Quicktime.
This particular computer is not and can not be hooked up to the internet. So, when an attempt is made to open a game for example, a Quicktime message pops up, saying it's not installed, etc.
Questions:
Do you have to have Quicktime installed in order to play a game? If not, how do you get around this?
This is a used computer and there are no system discs to reinstall/boot from. So we are trying the above mentioned advice as far as we can take it without an install disc.
So far, we are back to a normal desk top, but can not get a simple game (low demand) to open and play (because of the absence of Quicktime). Something that will work is Appleworks, so we know the system does function for other things.
If Quicktime is a must and it will clear the way for playing games, which Quicktime is recommended for the Imac G3? Can it be ordered/delivered? Or is this just an online download type thing?
Thanks from kdj
