The Mac Pro doesn't have an IR receiver. You can either get a plug in receiver like a Keyspan dongle, or a bluetooth phone with Salling Clicker or Romeo, or an iPod touch/iPhone/Wiimote/Apple remote/other stuff with the Remote Buddy web app.

If you are looking for function over form you can try finding an ATI remote wonder. It is an rf remote control and easy to customize so each button does something else in each application.

Apple Remote Control Solutions and more - Twisted Melon : Fine Mac OS Software has info on a IR receiver you can buy for the Mac Pro to make the normal Apple Remote work with it. They also sell software to make the remote more useful for other tasks, be it the Apple remote, or other ones, similar to Remote Buddy.

I don't have much of an issue with the $20, but the receiver is backorder 2-3 weeks.

Has anyone actually used the receiver with a REAL apple remote?

I can understand Apple not putting a receiver on the MacPro by default. Where would it have gone? Most peeps keep the towers below eye level. To toss it in the displays wouldn't be right either, some peeps use more than one cinema display while others use none. I do miss this feature after having it on several other macs.
