OK, I get it that you just connect the speakers to the headphone jack. BUT, I have 2 older Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks with RCA plugs. They originally plugged into a Harmon Kardon woofer, and then the woofer plugged into a USB port on the Mac. But the woofer is dead. So, my question is: can I find an adapter to plug these Sound Sticks into and then plug into the headphone jack on the computer? And, just as important, will the headphone jack power the speakers?

Resurrecting a 6 year old thread isn't usually the best idea. I've created a new post with a link to the original here:

In answer to the question, you can easily pick up an RCA (red/white) to mini jack stereo adapter at Radio Shack or anywhere that sells audio adapters. As for powering the speakers, you may have a problem there. The minijack does not provide enough power for powered speakers, only for things like headphones.

You need an amp with those speakers. The sub woofer included the amp for the sound sticks, but by themselves, they won't do any good.

Honestly, it's probably not even worth buying a separate amp. For that money, you might as well buy a new set of powered speakers.
