Hello, I've started doing freelance work for one of my clients who have tooled up with better kit than I have, but the performance is lousy. They have a G4 2Ghz Intel dual core iMac with 512mb DDR2 SDRAM running 10.4.4 and it takes about 10 attempts to open Indesign (genuine Adobe software). Each time I start work the Indesign document was supposedly not saved correctly and has to be re-configured and it often crashes half-way through. I then have to force quit as Indesign hangs and does not respond. This happens a lot when I use the bosses favourite font Calibri which they have just purchased. It makes me look as if I'm playing around rather than working. Do we need more ram or something like that. Any help greatly received, kind regards, David Belton, Langhanprint

There's no such thing as a G4 Intel Core Duo. Is this a G4 PowerPC iMac (the white dome with the monitor attached by a silver arm) or an Intel iMac (all in one unit; white or the newest aluminum)? Depending on whether the machine is PPC or Intel, you should have an appropriate version of the software you are trying to use (PowerPC or Universal for use on either a PowerPC machine or an Intel machine). What version of Indesign are you using?
Second, 512 MB is next to nothing. Put more memory in that thing, especially when trying to run Adobe software.
Next, update to 10.4.11. 10.4.4 must be at least a year and a half old.
Try these things out and get back to us with an update.
Steve

Thanks Steve, the iMac is the white flat screen on a silver arm. In the about this mac it says Intel Core duo iMac 4,1. I think tht it was my mistake to assume it meant G4.
The Indesign is CS2 4.0.0.421 Power PC.
I'll get some more ram and see how we get on.
Thanks again,
David

If it is the flexible silver arm (not the fixed stand; as I said, the G4 had a white dome on the bottom where the CD came out), it cannot be an Intel Mac. That is a PowerPC G4 and you have the correct version of Indesign for it. However, if About this Mac says it's Intel, then that's a newer machine with the fixed silver stand and you can only tilt the display, not move it up and down.
But you definitely should have more memory and update the OS.

Hello Steve,
I'm going to get the boss to get some more RAM and update the OS this pm. I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks again,
David Belton
