Anyone know when the next iteration of Mac Pro models are to be released? Looking to upgrade from my old Powerbook G4 which frequently freezes using Safari and my email, with leopard 10.5.

My guess will be in the fall. If you look at apples support web site under specifications .. Apple - Support - Specifications ..it shows mac pro (early 2008). So am assuming another later in the year.

since the 8-cores just came up recently, it will be a while before anything new comes out. i dont think it will be anything remarkably better about the next generation. what more can they do that you can't add yourself (blu-ray disc, etc.)

Nehalem (new Xeon system architecture) will be released in Q3, Apple will probably take until Q4 to implement it (or maybe even Q1).

What Mark and ide said, not soon. Existing MPs are way strong, even the 2006 boxes, and the market segment and evolving tech just do not justify any kind of soon upgrade.

Buy now Fred, life is short.

However if you choose to stay mobile Macbook Pro upgrades are imminent.

I'm so happy with the performance of my 2006 quad-core 2.66GHz Mac Pro, I haven't even considered replacing the machine yet. RAM is cheap(-ish) and I'm good on HD space, so I'm not even thinking about a future revision yet.

early 2008 means nothing, people. It just means that they released it in early 2008. It doesn't guarantee any more Mac pro releases this year. I wouldn't place any bets until next Macworld.

Try 10.5.2 and also try Firefox. Hopefully you already have max RAM. Safari is a RAM hog.

It was 520 days between Mac Pro refreshes for this latest update. Considering this refresh is only a month and a half old, if you want a new Mac Pro, buy now.

Good luck!

Unless you have a hardware issue and your are OOW, your issue is 100% fixable. I'm not the type that likes to spend money needlessly, but maybe you are using it for justification in your head to get a new system (i've done that before with stuff).

Anyways, may I suggest you backup your data, wipe the drive, clean install 10.5 and slowly add your applications and data back onto the machine. Chances are you'll be surprised how well the machine can run.

good luck!

They never get released at Macworld. Look at when they were released this year. It will probably be around the same time next year, unless there are smaller updates in the interim.
