OK, just a quick question:

You know the screws which bolt the HD into the caddy? Does a new, single-HD machine come with screws for all four caddies? (i.e. 12 extra screws). If so, where are they to be found- in the box or taped to the inside of the chassis?

Gotta put some more HDs into a new Mac Pro for a friend (in build right now) and it occurred to me that I've never bought a Mac Pro for myself that hasn't got all four drive bays already filled.

Thanks chaps.

Sweet. Where will I find them? Your answer suggests that they're screwed into the caddies already?

They are captive screws that are attached to the caddy.

See, now you've confused me even further Mal.

Just pulled a HD out of my MP, unscrewed the drive from the caddy. If the drive isn't there to screw the screws into, the screws just fall out.

This is why I asked - since mine exhibits this behaviour (i.e. the screws couldn't be in the caddy if there's no drive there) I was wondering where I'd find them on a machine shipped with 3 empty drive bays.

But if they're shipping them with captive screws now, there's no problem.

Thanks guys.

Really? I didn't know that. Mine (early 2008 MP) has two rubber gasket-like things on each screw to keep the screws from falling out. I bought my MP with only one drive and all my caddies came with this screw/gasket arrangement.

Same here. The MPs I use at work (dual Clovertowns) came with captive screws in every caddy.
