Okay, here's another one of my no-brainers again, but why do I have the feeling that everyone's scrambling for the 8800GT video card?
Why is it better?
Anyone?
Thanks in advance,
Clark

It's the fastest of the limited video card options available for the Mac Pro.

And suppose I want to replace the ATI 1900 card that's in there now, what is the best plan, just install the software/driver for the new one and then switch the new 8800 for the old ATI?

Nope; the 8800GT isn't compatible with your Mac. It may be in the future, or it may not.

I have an 3.0 Ghz 8 core from last August 07.
Do you mean to tell me that the 8800GT isn't compatible with this machine?

Why does there have to be such a difference in models that are only a few months apart from one another? For the money that you pay for a machine like this, it would be great that they didn't reflect their 'age' in these ways quite so fast....
Or am I being too idealistic?
But okay, if that's the way it is, then I'll set that money aside for if and when....

If you have the last gen mac pro's even including the previous 8 core machines, you wont be able to use the 8800gt in it just yet. I believe apple is working on the 32bit rom version cards and the current 8800gt has a 64bit rom that will only work in the current mac pros.
I just ordered the 8800gt the card itself one last month and still on the waiting list... seems like it will ship on april 3rd... I'm so pissed because ordered my mac pro from macmall and I could've ordered the same model for almost the same price maybe $150 more with the 8800gt in it and macmall currently has the 2.8ghz 8 core model with the 8800gt instock... but then takes 2 months just for the card to arrive... what's going on here???
