My original Maxtor 160 Gb HD is filling up, I’m considering adding a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB to my Mac - G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz.
The Barracuda is much faster and I would like to run it as my main disk, formatting the old one and use it for files and backups. I don’t have an external HD to backup my files, so the million-dollar question is how do I transfer the OS and the software to the new disk without risking loosing any data. Does anybody know how to go about this or any links for to the subject. Thanks in advance, mindspray

If the Seagate is a sata drive then just put it in the extra HD space, the G5 can accommodate 2 HD or more if you don't mind taking out the DVD/CD drive.

1. Place new drive in bottom slot in HD bay.
2. Use Disk Utility to format new drive to HFS +Journaled.
3. Clone drive with CCC(carbon copy cloner) or Superduper or better yet just use the restore button in Disk Utility(which is free and comes with OS X).
4. After cloning open System Preferences- Startup Disk, select the drive you just cloned.
5. Reboot.
6. All should be golden.

After all that you can use Disk Utility to Format/Erase old drive.

You can also use Disk Utility instead of a third party app to do the cloning - use the Restore function.
