I have a Mac Pro with a GeForce 7300 GT display card.

My monitor supports 2560x1600 resolution, but I can't get that selection in the Display Preferences. I've checked the manual and tried both DVI ports on the back of the box, but no soap.

This is really bothering me; I'll buy a new card if I have to, but even the Apple web site doesn't list supported resolutions for their cards.

Is this typical of the problems I'm going to face migrating from Windows?

Based on this page, here, it looks like the GeForce 7300 GT display with 256MB (you don't say how much you've got) does a max of 1920 x 1200. (Page down and look under 'Product Details")

Is this typical of the problems I'm going to face migrating from Windows?
Well, since you can quite easily have precisely those kinds of problems even if you stay on Windows, I'd have to say 'no'.

The 7300GT supports dual-link DVI (2560x1600 and higher) on one port and single-link DVI (1920x1200 or lower) on the other. Try one, click detect displays, then try the other if it doesn't offer 2560x1600. Or just force it with SwitchResX.

Also adjust the refresh rate. You may be able to get 2560x1600, but only at 72Hz or lower.

Just for curiousity's sake, what type of monitor do you have? As well we're assuming the 7300GT card you have in it came with the Mac Pro from Apple and is not a flashed 7300GT?
