Hiya

Transferring data from a G4 Powermac 1.25Ghz to a new MacBook. Attached the fw cable to the G4 and the MB but everytime I start the G4 holding the t key down it chimes, powers up, runs the fans then shuts straight back down again. Starting up normally is fine.

Any ideas. Would just use ethernet instead to migrate the data but (wouldn't you know it) the DVD drive in the G4 is broke so no way to insert the MacBooks instal disc to run the remote migrate software.

Any ideas on whats up with the target mode?

If OS X functions on the G5 you could put the new computer in TDM and copy files over to its drive manually. First time I've heard of a problem with TDM.

Me to. It's weird.

Mac boots fine normally. Tried swapping out the drives for another set (with a system etc on them) sam result boots fine normally but TDm just causes the Mac to shut straight back down again.

I'm going to try a FW800 cable instead of a 400. Failing that all I can think of is to put the drive in an external enclosure and see what that does.

*&*&%$£!!!@***!*!*

It appears that for this particular model of Mac (MDD G4) the target disc must be in the original position on the IDE bus as the boot drive was when the mac was manufactured!

Swapped drive from one bus to another - bingo!

Ah, glad you figured it out. Little hardware quirks can be quite annoying.
