The manual for the Mac Pro states that drives added must be SATA 3 GB/s. I have several drives..two are a year old, another is probably 2 or 3 years old. They are all SATA but not sure of the GB/s rating on any of them. I think they are 7200 drives. I don't think they are 5400.

Any harm in installing? Is there any way to tell what the GB per second is for a drive..from the label? (they are all Western Digital)

Just trying to figure out how I can see if these drives are up to the requirements...

Thanks!

I should think they would all be fine.

If you Google the model number, you'll be able to find out if they're SATA I (1.5GB/s) or SATA II (3.0GB/s).

I wouldnt worry about it at all. The 1.5 or 3Gbps rating is for the speed of the interface and not the drives. No SATA drive is even close to those speeds.

The manual says they "MUST" meet the 3GBs rating to be installed. Would installing 1.5GB/s affect the performance of the Mac Pro? Other than the drive being slower?

Aside from a couple weird cases it doesn't matter at all... it will work and with the same performance.
