they are sory of close in price and I have a 52 inch sony xbr tv.
what would be a compelling reason to get one or the other?

I'm pretty sure the AppleTV is the only place you can rent HD movies from currently. Who knows if that will change in the future.

Ok, I will be very honest with you. The Mac Mini is way better than the Apple TV, think of the Apple TV as a VCR of this century. you just will be able to use it to see what Apple offers and nothing more. Now. With the Mac Mini it's another story. Go to this site: Equinux and download MEDIA CENTRAL application and you will be doing a lot more with your Mac mini with the ease of use of the Apple TV, I mean, with the Apple Remote and all, you will be in heaven.
I saw it working and let me tell you: That's an Apple app that push the envelope on a Mac Mini. Do that!
