I'm not sure where to post this, so I just thought I'd drop it in here. Sorry if I posted in the wrong place.

Hey everyone,

I'm currently looking for a Mac that I can use as a temporary computer, until I can get either a MacBook or a MacBook Pro. I'll be using it for surfing the web, word processing, music, and basic photo editing. I plan on using it for the next 4-5 months, so I'm not looking to spend that much.

With that said, I found this on Craigslist...
Power MAC G4 Tower

Now I know Macs keep their resale value for quite a while, but is a 9 year old Mac still worth buying, even for that price? Keeping the specs and the age in mind, do you think it's still worth picking up?

For those of you who are still using a G4 400mhz, on a daily basis, how does it hold up with the current software (especially the newer OS's)?

Can anyone suggest anywhere else that I can find good deals on second-hand Macs?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

Keep in mind that the 400 MHz G4 will not support Leopard, only Tiger (10.4) or earlier.

I ran a dual 450 with 1GB of RAM for a second computer for a short time and it was fairly sluggish.

That model will have some limitations for upgrades, for example the memory it uses will be PC100.

If you could get the computer for a little less it would be a decent value. Just remember that it is not going to give you a real favorable impression.

No. Work a couple extra hours overtime and get a refurb MacBook in a couple months. There's no point in buying a boat anchor that can't run current software and can't run yesterday's software well.

Mduell, you may as well save your breath. I don't know why we bother trying to talk people out of buying old pieces of junk that they're already probably going to buy. Nobody comes in here for sound financial advice, just more blather from teenagers.

Unless its $50 or less, its not worth investing in a G4.
Working overtime = more money & less time to want to be on the computer.
Yes, Sawtooth G4's can be workhorses... but if you're intending on getting a laptop in the next 6 months... look at it this way:
4gb of ram for a macbook costs $70 (shipped) from newegg. that leaves $15 for new headphones, etc in comparison to the G4 in the advertisement.
If you're crazy about getting a G4 tower.... check out college surplus auctions.

I wouldn't get something that limited. Maybe if you found a 867 MHz or better Power Mac G4 for around $100 that could do a decent job of tiding you over, but really I would just wait.

That is dirt cheap and a decent deal for your needs IF (and only if) you already own a display and all the appropriate software versions for that specific box. Upgrading and/or finding versions for the G4 is a PITA, not usually worth the effort (but the G4 will run 10.4.11 OK). Living with just the installed OS 9 is a bad choice. Better you should look for a G4 Powerbook.
