I have Tiger 10.4.11 and cannot get Mail to work as it keeps giving me the message "The SMTP server “smtp.dsl.pipex.com” rejected the password for user “******.pipex.com”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.

I keep entering passwords (as I remember them) but this message still keeps coming up. I have managed to send and receive emails before using Mail but cannot remember how I did it as my main email client is Thunderbird and I only use Mail occasionally. Is there a simple fix for this so that I can use Mail more without constant password requests?

Double-check the settings for the SMTP server. You may need to use an alternate port and SSL.

Thanks but I don't fully understand. All my email and internet connections are made through my ethernet connection to my router ... if that's what you mean .... and whats SSL please?

The password that Mail is asking for is your email account password, not anything to do with your Mac log in, admin or user account. Some email services require authentication to send. Copy the settings that work for you in Thunderbird (Tools -- Account Settings -- Outgoing Server) and plug those into Mail (Preferences -- Accounts -- Outgoing Mail Server).

There is really no way we can you without knowing how your ISPs servers are setup. Have they provided any documentation for you? Anything on their website?

From your message it looks like you had it working at one point, which makes me think you might just have forgotten the password. Call your ISP and ask them to reset it for you.

Your server name, smtp.dsl.pipex.com, seems to be set correctly. However, your username should be the part that goes before the @ sign, not username.pipex.com. For example Steve Jobs username is sjobs. His email address is sjobs@apple.com, the domain name is apple.com, and the mail server would be mail.apple.com or smtp.apple.com.

Once this is all set up correctly, you have to enter your mail password, which is separate from your Mac login or possibly even your Internet connection password.

Thanks for all the advice guys but I have now sent several emails WITHOUT constant password prompts and now waiting to see if they arrive ok as only one of my tests has arrived back to me (via Thunderbird). At this precise moment I do not know what I did to enable this but now I'm now waiting with bated breath to see if it all works.

The reason I posted was that using iPhoto to batch reduce photo's to email using Mail is such a simple automated action that it's a shame it doesn't work all the time for me! Well here's hoping .....

Take a look in Keychain access at what your thunderbird email password is.
