I was shocked to see dismal Motion test performance of the 8800 GT in a recent BareFeats test. I hadn't even questioned getting the 8800, but as a Motion user, now I feel like I better research the options.

Probably just a driver issue... the 8800GT is a screamer on Windows, so it's possible for Apple to improve the situation.
Does the 8600M in the MBP have the same performance deficit compared to the mobile 2600 in the iMac?

It's not up to Apple to write display drivers, it is up to NVidia or AMD, and lately NVidia seems to be shrugging off the Mac platform again.
