When I'm working on my Imac for a while, my trackball goes out on me for a while. I have the wireless mighty mouse and sometimes when I try to scroll dowm with the little ball, I get no response. Up works fine though. After a while, it comes back, but whats going on with that? Do I need a new mouse?

probably you are using a mighty mouse which has a notoriously bad trackball which clogs quite often. just clean it and it will probably start working again. It is not a bad mouse its just a poor design.

the mighty mouse ball is pretty much a trackpad upside down... so it gets dirty just like Victoria says. It CAN clog permanently though.. in which case it's time to take it to an Apple Store for a replacement. (You'll need an appointment at the Genius Bar and the serial number of your iMac. If you have AppleCare, just call 800-APL-CARE)

Get a damp cloth, turn the mouse upside down and rub the trackball on the cloth for a while, then see if it starts working properly again.

This is a method that seems to works (for a while at least):
  • Start of with a clean sheet of A4 paper,
  • Inplug the Mighty Mouse then turn it upside down
  • Roll the Mighty Mouse against the paper, back and forth, around and about for 'bout 3 seconds
  • Plug the Mouse back into the keyboard (if wireless then don't) and everything should be hunky dory.
I found this link which has yet another method to try.
