Ok, I shut down my mac pro 2008 this afternoon, and right after the shut down, it started to sound like a vacuum cleaner. I believe it was one of the fans in the back running really crazy fast. The only way to stop it was to actually unplug the mac. I am stumped by this, and worried this mac is a lemon? Has anyone heard about this? Is this the time to send this mac to the shop (already?).

I'm not nuts: it happened again, and my girlfriend's a witness. After working with Lightroom for about two hours, after shutdown, the fan in the back spin like crazy. Again the only way to stop it was to unplug. Anyone heard of a similar case?

It's not shutting down properly if the fans don't shut off. Apparently you're experiencing a Kernel Panic on shut down.

Each time it happened, an external drive was connected via the front USB port. First time it was a photo portable drive, the second time a USB photo card reader. In each case, I had trouble with copying files from them to the desktop. Could this has anything to do with the USB port(s)?
