I just purchased an 20" iMac recently(about 3 month) and I'm fascinated with the machine in all aspects. I need to know if anyone out there has had the same problem that i'm having. You see, the computer's fan started running for about 2 days now NONSTOP and is getting to annoy me. The fan never but never was on,but now is running forever and i don't know what to do. Is that normal or what. Now it's noisy and is not same as before where it was quite and peaceful. I'm all ears with any suggestion,Thanks.

Do you have a web browser open on a page with a flash element (banner, video, game, whatever) on it? That will drive CPU usage and thus fan noise way up on a Mac.

No,not really, no web browser overhere and by the way this morning I noticed that the hard drive icon which stays on the upper right corner doesn't say Machintosh HD anymore, instead it gives me (I guess) the binary numbers for that which is "1011". I feel that this is getting worst everyday, let see in the next couple days what happens and if not I'll take it to warranty, thanks a lot

First, for your initial question: Open Activity Monitor (in Utilities) and check if any app is using a lot of CPU time. The renamed HD can really be anything.

if the fan goes out of control then just download SMC fan control and you just manually alter the speed. you can quite the application and it will continue its automatic run

smc fancontrol lets manually adjust the speed - maybe not the safest thing to do.

check the fans with with the Hardware diagnostic DVD

If the problem persists after rebooting - reset the SMU

google how to do it...

I tried it on a iMac G5 PC4200 and the method did not work - so i took it apart and disconnected the Motherboard THat worked...

Maybe just disconnecting from the power socket for a day would do it

well smc also shows you to see the temperature of the hardware, making it safe to use...
