The graphics card in my aging G5 dual 2GHz has died and I either replace the card or the whole machine. I am still using the clear cased CRT with an ADC connector. Is this supported by the radeon 9600 mac edition? Would I be able to use it if I got a new machine with a 2600 XT?

Does the DVI to ADC display adaptor work with CRTs?

A CRT with an ADC connector... are you sure about that?

Yes, Virginia, there is an Apple CRT with an ADC connector.

I don't know of any reason why a DVI-ADC adaptor wouldn't work with the Apple CRT display.

Crazy.

The expensive ($100) DVI-ADC adapter should work; the cheap ($20) one won't.

I would consider putting the $100 into a new display with DVI to go along with your new video card. The 2600 does not have an ADC, I don't know about the 9600.

$100 will put you 2/3 of the way toward buying a 19" widescreen LCD. Don't waste your money on an adapter to use such an old monitor.

Thanks guys for the advice. The apple DVI-ADC adaptor doesn't work with CRT's. As I was having other issues with my G5 I decided to get a new Pro. Bit sooner than I intended.

Just need to get a new monitor now and sorted....

Discovered I can use screen sharing from the Pro to the G5 and still use the G5- very cool!

What sort of monitor are you looking at? I'd suggest a 24" if you've got a new Mac Pro. You don't want to skimp!

Yeah i'd go for a 24" minimum monitor. I am currently looking for a monitor and I still like the Apple displays but i am concerned that they will be updated soon and lack HDCP (future proofing). Depending on what you do (photos, videos etc) i like the NEC LCD2490WUXi. Although it is quite expensive
