I've seen this beast for 2199 Euros ($3410) on the Apple France store :

Refurbished Mac Pro 8-core 3.0GHz Intel Xeon
Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors
1GB (2 x 512MB) memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive
16x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory

Its been there a while now, whereas a previous MacPro went within a day. I haven't got the cash available right at this moment, but if it stays for a while longer, is this something to consider buying? I'd probably upgrade to the 8800 and then get some more RAM from someone like MacWay.

There's a reason it's sticking around... the base model from the current generation should be cheaper and faster.

Ok, see your point. I just thought that with 2 x 3.0 GHz CPUs it would have been a good buy.

I still don't have the money yet, hopefully when I do, there will be something worthwhile. But then a much more experienced Mac user than I told me to wait until the Nehalem based Pros come out.

Good advice - Nehalem looks like it will be eating the older Xeons for breakfast - but that won't happen until at least November and more likely Macworld, just after Christmas. You also never know with a new design - they could have yield problems that keep prices high and clockspeeds low - so it's a little bit risky and a long wait.

There's always something around the corner... if you need a Mac Pro in June, you can't wait for the Nehalem release in Q4. If you're just thinking "it'd be nice to have a new computer", then waiting the better part of a year for a Nehalem refurb is sensible. Nehalem is showing good performance gains (20-50%) at the same clockrate compared to the Penryn Xeons.

Its looking more and more like the negotiations with my accountant (my wife) have failed. New computer purchases will have to be put off until the very end of this year or early next year.

However, this could mean that I have greater purchasing power. One can only hope.

If the price is right a MacPro with one Nehalem CPU and a new Radeon 3870 WILL BE MINE.

By that time, they will probably have Radeon 4850s at least. That is looking like one impressive card for the money right now.

Is this card going to be for Macs as well? I haven't seen anything that says it'll be Mac 'worthy'.

It's unknown which cards Apple will choose to offer or which cards may be offered by third parties. I'd like to see a GTX260 with decent drivers.
