For the longest time, I have been trying to justify an upgrade from a Dual 2.0 G5 Powermac to the new MacPros. One of the big factors in my decision was heat output and power usage as my ventilation in my room is just so-so. Plus because I leave my computer on 24/7, I needed to find something that would save on energy. It costs about $50/month to leave that g5 on constantly!
I finally bit the bullet and bought an 8 core 2.8ghz MacPro. Hooking up my power meter (kill a watt), I found that the MacPro uses 190-210 watts vs. 300-330 watts for a dual g5. Big difference! Plus, I greatly notice a reduction of heat coming out of the back of the computer. My Mac Pro has 10gb RAM with 4 SATA HD while my G5 had 6gb RAM and 2 SATA drives.
Well worth the switch to the MacPro. The speed increase is phenomenal -especially when doing multiple things at once (running safari/photoshop/video rendering in the background). Always snappy and rarely seeing the spinning beach ball.
Just wanted to post this as I was looking for someone to do this comparison for over 6 months and nothing showed up on google.

It's interesting to see it quantified. I could have told you the Mac Pro would use less power -- my old Dual-2.0 G5 used to warm the room I was in significantly, by my Mac Pro never does. It's also significantly quieter than the G5 ever was.

Buy a Mac Pro, save $200 a year directly on your power bill. Plus more savings from running your air conditioning less and getting work done faster.

hehehe - that is EXACTLY what I told my wife to justify me spending $3500 on a new computer + drives and memory! Actually, I told her I would save close to $400 a year on the difference in energy and also A/C usage during the hot summer months. She didn't say a word (which is good) and I sold my old G5 for $1000 toward the MacPro.
Amazingly, where I was using the A/C last month continuously (24/7) to prevent my g5 from crashing/freezing, I have been running the MacPro without A/C and it feels comfortable in the room.
