I have replaced two linksys routers and now have there newest expensive one. My Imac will lose the wireless signal and scan and pick up the signal again. I finally got a laptop to check the router and when the imac is scanning or it states not connected in Safari the laptop works just fine. So evidentally it is not the router or my provider but the imac. The imac is three feet from the router and other computers work all over the house.

Is there some setting that I am missing?

More detail Even when I am connected and click on airport it goes from on to scanning back and forth.

This may or may not be your problem, but it fixed mine. Mine started since I downloaded Leopard about six months ago where it kept not recognizing my airport connection. Since I've done this, the problem is all gone, and you will need to copy your WEP password when you reconnect:

1) Open Network, click on Airport
2) Delete all instances of “Preferred Networks” in “Network Preferences”.
3) Delete all “Airport network password” instances in “Keychain Access”.
4) Restart your Mac.
5) Add/Join applicable preferred network using the Airport pulldown menu or in Network Preferences (as if for the first time). Use “Advanced” in “Network Preferences” to confirm the existence of your preferred network and the correct settings. Use “Keychain Access” to confirm the existence of the applicable “Airport network password” instance and the correct settings.
6) Restart your Mac. The OS should now find your preferred network and join it on its own.

Worked for me, hope it does for you.

I tried to follow your instructions but they were not the same on my imac (leapard) I did have two networks in the list so I deleted one and kept the other one and rebooted. It still scans but is working so I will wait and see. I did notice that in system prefs, networks, airport, advanced, and under servers in the search domain it has domain invalid. Not sure what that is or what it means if anything.

Try disabling IPv6. System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced... > TCP/IP tab > IPv6: Off.

I'll try that and let you know. It was still loading and searching so I hardwired it to the router. I changed the tcp/ip setting you suggested and will reboot.

I an testing to see if I lose my connection but have a question. When you click on the airport icon and the pull down menu appears does airport start scanning? My airport will scan then go to "on". Is that supposed to happen??
