I use my iMac for personal computing, very little space hungry apps. I woke my iMac yesterday, to find it sluggish. Opened the HD to start the Disk Utility, and of my 150GB HD, I only have 190MB left! Last I recall, I had about 90GB. Checked my music, thats my largest collection of files(2500 songs, 4 seasons of Lost...), and its still there, thought maybe I somehow duplicated it, but I didn't. On Disk Utility, It shows I have 411,000 folders...1.8 million files. ANyone have any explanations, reasons, fixes?? Thanks.

There could be a few different explanations. At some point, there was a faulty game controller driver that would cause free space to get eaten up. I've also seen log files go crazy and just consume all unused space.

Basically, just start narrowing down where it's coming from. Use the "Get Info" command to find out which folder it's coming from... start at the Macintosh HD and work down. It could be in the "Users" or "Library" or something else,... just keep digging until you find it. Then.... depending on what it is... i'd probably delete it, repair permissions, and be on my merry way.

My guess... a log file. Check Library/Logs or Users/Your User/Library/Logs.

Search for Disk Inventory X on Versiontracker. With a program like that, you can graphically see immediately what's taking up so much space.

So I've been gone on vacation, bought a new iPhone, playing wth that, and I go to sync with my iMac today and remembered it was ill before I left. Called AppleCare, and as I checked this board for replies to this post, the tech had me check space on all log files, and low and behold, console.log.5 was 86.12GB. Damn you guys are good, no longer will I buy AppleCare, just obsess over these boards. Thanks.

That's why I've been a member for so long. I can't count how many times MacNN saved my ass.
