Hi, it's been a while since I first mentioned this odd malfunction of my iMac g5.

hardware
iMac g5 2.1ghz 20" with damaged screen because someone cut it up (here is proof, it was a bargain)
samsung syncmaster 205bw by vga-mini
OSX 4.11

Suddenly it lost dual screen capability. All it can do right now is mirror to my external 20" samsung lcd.

this is how the display prefs look like :

I need the dual screen functionality, this iMacs was reinstalled with the original disks but it didn't help.
is it possible to install AppleScript firmware updater from Klaus Rutemölle ? It was ment for ibooks that had no dual screen capability. I don't want to destroy my imac but do like dual screen. Thank you.

This may be an obvious question, but have you checked the Displays preferences on the Arrange tab to disable mirroring?

Try resetting the pram by holding cmd + option + p + r after the boot chime. Do this until it chimes for 2 more times, then let it boot up and see if the problem is fixed.

hi Steve, please notice that the "turn mirroring on/off"-option (or how it's called) is not in the screenshot either, it should be right below "detect displays". Which is just abnormal as he has obviously two screens in this setup.

I didn't think the G5 iMacs could do dual desktop- only mirror. I thought it wasn't until the intel iMacs that dual desktop was standard... I think there's a program (screen span doctor, or something like that) that'll let you span on a G5.

Exactly. Out of the box the iMac G5 can only mirror

The Intel Macs with their miniDVI were the first iMacs to support spanning out of the box. As the above poster pointed out, you will need Screen Spanning Doctor to enable spanning on your iMac.

Well, in principle they can - the GPU, the port, and the OS all support it. It's just that Apple disabled the feature in OF. SSD will allow you to enable it again.
