10.5.3 woes

We have an Intel Mac Pro that we've updated to 10.5.3 when it was released, but ever since installing 10.5.3, no other software installations will work. I've just tried installing the 10.5.4 combo update, and the installer will function correctly even past the point where I can choose a drive, but when the Install button appears and I click it, it'll gray out for a few seconds and come back. This happens with any software package I try to install.

I've just repaired disk permissions and even attempted to install packages from safe mode, but no dice.

Anyone have any hints?

My advice: Backup your important files and perform an Erase and Install.
