Hi All,
My venerable G5 won't turn on. Before I take it in for repair, any suggestions as to what I could try? I'm in the UK, and I've already replaced the fuse in the power cord.
It's probably not relevant, but I had just upgraded it to 10.5 the day before, and it died sometime in the night while I was moving some data around (from external archive disk to internal disk, but the external disk has been plugged in to this machine already for ages, nothing new).
Thanks in advance for any help,
Chas

Press the reset button on the motherboard for a few seconds, then try again to power up.
The button is typically located somewhere on the bottom-forward section of the board.

Unplug all external devices, especially the disk in case it died some horrible power related death which is now preventing the machine from powering up.
Check for any leaking coolant in the case as this was sometimes an issue with G5s.

Note that that's only for Rev. A G5s. The rest reset when unplugged from a power source for some number of minutes.

It also covers my late-model Quad G5.

Hi All, thanks for the replies and advice.
reader50, I found the PMU reset (I think mine is a rev B machine), but no joy (leaving it unplugged for a while also had no effect).
seanc, mine isn't liquid cooled (those leaked?!?), and unplugging everything had no effect (agony, as the machine is deep under a desk, hard as heck to get to the back, and I had tons of stuff plugged in! :-/
Now, best case scenario is that it's just a power supply that needs replacement, any ideas of how hard it is to get one of these? (and cost?).
Luckily, I just took delivery of a Wiebetech external SATA case (which has firewire as well as eSATA connectors), as its drive insert procedure requires no trays (they're like big floppies!). I can pull the internal drives from the desktop and access them with my laptop. What I do need is to get an eSATA card for my laptop, as the bulk of my data is in an eSATA enclosure.
Thanks again,
Chas
